Starting out in the choral scene at the young age of 12, Gabriel embarked on his training as a musician in the choirs of Catholic High School and Victoria Junior College, where he honed his choral and rehearsal techniques as a student conductor under the tutelage of Mr. Nelson Kwei.
After finishing his term in National Service, Gabriel took a step further from student conductorship to vocal tutorship, imparting his knowledge on voice to numerous school choirs.
In July 2007, Gabriel led Catholic High School’s Edward Becheras Choir as a guest conductor at the third A Voyage of Songs in Pattaya, Thailand, clinching a gold award. Notably, this was his debut as a conductor participating in an international choral competition.
The following year, he guest conducted Victoria School choir to two gold medals as well as Category Champion at the Festival of Songs 2008 held in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He also brought them to the competition finals, battling out the title for the absolute winner of the festival.
In May 2009, Gabriel made his debut appearance as a conductor in the SYF Central Judging for Choirs, attaining a silver award for Nanyang Junior College Choir, training up the choir only within a few months.
Gabriel also conducted the National University of Singapore Choir in July 2009 in the capacity of a student conductor, competing in the folklore category at the Orientale Concentus II International Choral Festival 2009 held in Hangzhou, China. The choir not only attained a gold, but also category champions and a special jury prize in the competition.
Gabriel continues to inspire students and peers alike with his passion for music in the capacity of student conductor of the National University of Singapore Choir and voice tutor of Nanyang Junior College Choir.
