Hak Luen started his choral journey singing in one of Singapore’s premier community choir, The Vocal Consort, where he develops his knowledge of singing and conducting skills under the baton of Mr Nelson Kwei. He attended many conducting masterclasses and lessons around the world given by Mr Gabor Hollerung, Mr Eric Whitacre, Dr Joshua Habermann, Mr Leon Tong, Dr Jeffrey Carter, Prof. John Paul Johnson and Dr Zechariah Goh. He received voice coaching from Dr Wong Su Sun and Mr Thomas Kuek and has obtained Professional Performance Certificate (Baritone) and ATCL Recital (Counter-Tenor) from the Trinity College of Music, London.
In 2007, he led Tanjong Katong Secondary School Choir to win 2 Gold Awards and 1 Category Winner in the 3rd A Voyage of Songs, International Choral Competition in Pattaya, Thailand. Following the success in Thailand, he directed Tanjong Katong Secondary School Choir to its second Gold Award in the 2nd Grand Prix St Petersburg Choral Competition in Russia together with Mr Nelson Kwei in June 2008.
In April 2008, he led Catholic High School (Primary) Choir to their first Gold with Honours Award in the 2008 SYF Central Judging for Choirs (Primary). Hak Luen then conducted Meridian Junior College Choir in June to clinch 2 Gold Awards, 1 Category Winner and Overall 2nd Place in the 36th Festival Of Songs held in Olomouc, Czech Republic. Following that in July, he brought Commonwealth Secondary School Choir to compete in Orientale Concentus, International Choral Competition in Suzhou, China and clinched the Gold Award plus Category Winner for the Mixed Youth Choir category.
In 2009, Hak Luen led Commonwealth Secondary School Choir and Meridian Junior College Choir to attain Gold with Honours in the 2009 SYF Central Judging for Choirs (Secondary/JC) and became the first and only choral conductor in Singapore to have choirs receiving Gold with Honours Awards at the Primary, Secondary and Junior College level. He was then selected to be the deputy conductor for a new choir under the new Music Talent Development Center (MTDC) programme headed by the Co-Curricular Activities Board (MOE) to train young choristers in the west zone.
In July, he brought The Vocal Consort to Hang Zhou, China to compete in Orientale Concentus II, International Choral Competition and not only did the choir emerge as Champions for both the Chamber Choir & Mixed Choir Category, they went on and claim the Grand Prize of the festival. Hak Luen was also awarded the Most Outstanding Conductor Award for his excellent results in the festival.
Hak Luen currently conducts Meridian Junior College Choir, St. Andrew Junior College Choir, Commonwealth Secondary School Choir, Clementi Town Secondary School Choir, South View Primary School Choir, Tampines North Primary School Choir and Tanjong Katong Primary School Choir. He is also the deputy conductor of Tanjong Katong Secondary School Choir, MTDC (West) Choir and The Vocal Consort.
He was recently voted as the Vice-Chairman for the Choral Directors’ Association (Singapore).
