Francis Liew, Lyric Tenor, studied voice under Mdm Huang Phay Ching at the age of 18. He has since performed both as soloist and chorister with the National University of Singapore Choir, Varsity Choral Ensemble, Singapore Symphony Chorus, The Lyric Opera Chorus and The Philharmonic Chorus.

Francis started conducting his church choirs in 1980, as well as the many combined church choirs over the years. Since his involvement with schools choirs in Jan 1999, he has nurtured many choirs from the primary to polytechnic levels. Francis started many of these choirs from scratch and transformed them into award winning choir in very short time. One of his choir is in the prestigious Choral Excellence Programme while the rest has achieve Silver and Gold Awards in the Singapore Youth Festival, Central Judging of Choirs and International Choral Competitions.

Believing in providing opportunities for choirs to perform and compete not just locally, Francis has led his choirs to Hawaii, USA(2002), Genting, Malaysia(2003), Olomouc, Czech Republic(2005), Shah Alam, Malaysia(2005), Olomouc, Czech Republic(2006), Hong Kong(2006), Kagoshima, Japan(2006). In 2008 alone, 7 of his choirs went abroad for Competitions in countries like Hong Kong, Czech Republic, China, Japan and Malaysia.

Besides helping his own choirs to grow, Francis also finds time to give choral workshops and vocal classes to many primary, secondary and church choirs.

Miss Susanna Pua graduated with a degree in the Bachelor of Music from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. She also holds an LTCL in Pianoforte Teaching. Since resigning from the teaching profession in 2006, she currently works as a piano teacher and freelances as a choral conductor for the choirs of Fairfield Methodist Primary, Xing Hua Primary, Nan Hua Primary, Beatty Secondary and Pei Cai Secondary schools.

Susanna serves as the music director of Carmel Church and sings actively in a local jazz acappella group - Key Elements.

Jason Ong is a conductor, composer, arranger and singer. By and large a self-taught musician, he has studied voice under Ms. Carol Stone and Prof. Chia Wei Kuen. An active Committee Member of the Choral Directors Association Singapore (CDAS), he helps to promote choral activities in Singapore.

Jason is the choral director of several secondary schools, and has helped the students to develop their self confidence and love of music through singing. Under his direction, his choirs have progressed from strength to strength, winning awards and gaining recognition as choirs who are entertaining and fun. He is also the resident choral director of the Singapore Men’s Chorus, which he co-founded in 2005. Since then, the chorus has put up quite a few successful public concerts, charming the audience with their colourful repertoire and occasional show-stopping choreography.

Jason’s forte lies in a cappella music. Since co-founding the all-male a cappella group, In-A-Chord in 1987, Jason has been a pioneering force behind the Singapore a cappella scene, promoting this genre of music to the public. In-A-Chord was the first a cappella group in Singapore to be signed on by a Taiwanese label (Forward) in 1995, and released two successful albums. In 2001, Jason joined Key Elements, widely considered as Singapore’s best jazz a cappella group. In Oct 2004, Key Elements took part in Taiwan’s 4th National “Sing Sing Together” Choral/Vocal Competition, and took home the 2nd place prize. Furthermore, Jason was awarded Best Arranger for his work on “A-Cent-Chu-ate The Positive”.

Jason also coaches students who participated in talent classes, helping them with their voice training lessons. As a voice teacher, he also helps his students to develop their talents as a performer, working on their singing techniques and performing skills.

As an arranger, he has arranged many songs for his a cappella groups In-A-Chord and Key Elements. He has also been commissioned by many schools and societies to arrange songs for many occasions, from concerts to special events like the Singapore Youth Festival. Having played in a combo band during his NUS years, he also arranges “minus ones” for many schools and people.

Among his many compositions Jason co-wrote the school song for Pioneer Junior College. In 2007, he collaborated with Singaporean short-film director Jeremy Sing, and wrote all the music for his short film, “Girl in a Red Sarong”. The film has since been screened around the world, from Tokyo to Berlin.

The SYF Central Judging of Choirs will be held in April 2010. Details are as follows:

SET PIECE

1. The CCA Branch of the Ministry of Education has commissioned the following set piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010 Central Judging of Choirs (Primary Schools):

Title: My Shadow (for Soprano, Alto and piano)

Composer: Dr Kelly Tang

2. The set piece is available for purchase on Friday 6 November, 2 – 5pm and Saturday 7 November, 9 am – 12pm at the Seminar Room, MOE CCA Branch: 21 Evans Road, Singapore 259366

3. Scores will be sold in pdf format, burnt in CD-ROM. Schools are to purchase a copy of the CD-ROM, and license for each participant. The minimum order is 30 licenses at $4.00 each. The price for 40 licenses and above is $3.50. Payment should be made by e-invoice.

4. The teacher-in-charge is requested to send an order of purchase to Dr Kelly Tang at kelly.tang@nie.edu.sg, with the following information by 3 November 2009:

- Name of School

- Name and telephone contact of Teacher-in-charge

- Business Unit Number of School

- No. of license required

5. MOE CCA Branch reserves all rights to the use of the set piece up to and including 22 April 2010. Any public performance or use of the set piece requires the permission of MOE CCA Branch.
